Iogear’s Mobile Digital Scribe

leave a comment »

Many note takers today face a choice of either lugging a laptop everywhere or writing everything down by hand and then manually entering their notes into a computer. Meanwhile, if you’re a compulsive doodler or graphic artist, many of your best works may be buried somewhere in the margins of an old notebook.

Iogear’s Mobile Digital Scribe ($130) represents an innovative alternative for note takers and sketchers alike: an ink pen with a digital component. The Digital Scribe comes with a receiver, and it saves everything you write to plain paper as a digital file. When you plug the receiver into a Windows PC, the device lets you upload your handwritten notes and convert them into text documents via the bundled My Script Notes 2.1 Lite optical character recognition (OCR) software.

Scan to eBook With Plustek OpticBook 4600 Book Scanner

leave a comment »

ant to photocopy that book? We have a better idea. Scan it with the newly introduced Plustek OpticBook 4600 Book Scanner. You might want to ask me why you should scan it rather than photocopy it. The reasons are plain simple:

- No paper required – as users can save the scanned file onto the hard drive or any portable storage media.
- Scan and save – besides printing out hard copy, users can choose to scan and save the file to any digital format.

This scanner has a resolution of 1200 dpi (interpolated to 24000) dpi and has a Scanning speed as stunning as 3.2 second per page. Besides, Plustek OpticBook 4600 comes with an optional stand. This thoughtful design elevates the scanner by 122mm with an 18.8 degree angle thereby generating the best scan result even when you are scanning a book with hard and bulky cover.

Create an eBook from a book instead of generating bulky papers. This is a great idea for libraries, as scanning a book is more convenient for both the students and the library than photocopying in this highly digitalised world.

Airport Scanners That See Through Clothes

leave a comment »

Millimeter wave scanners that will allow Transport Security Administration (TSA) personnel to see concealed weapons and other items that may be hidden beneath clothes may soon be installed on Los Angeles International Airport and John F. Kennedy Airport. This is an additional effort to boost security at the airports.

This idea will make uncomfortable some people who view this development as a further violation of their privacy. What happened to the data being gathered by the scanner? Will you really feel comfortable if you are fat and not fit, knowing that airport personnel are seeing right thrugh your clothes? One might as well walk naked. Well, this is the price one has to pay for security with the growing menace of terrorists who are equally going more sophisticated in their operations.

The agency said that security officers viewing the scans would do so remotely, where they will not be able to recognize passengers but will be able to trigger an alarm if needed. The agency also said that a blurring algorithm is applied to passengers’ faces in scanned images as an additional privacy protection.

However, the authority stated that an alternative screening option would be available for those reluctant to submit to a body scan. At JFK, millimeter wave scans will be a secondary screening option.
